Psalm 36:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Matthew 6: 33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
What do these two scriptures have to do with each other? It is true that God is a very present help in times of trouble. However, God’s help to His people comes with requirements. Some of us are parents, and we love our children. We want the best for our children, so out of love for them, we give them the best that we have and can afford. We provide them with food, shelter, education, recreation, and emotional support according to the best of our abilities. When they hurt, we hurt because we love and want only the best for them. However, to protect them we have certain requirements and expectations for them, so that they learn appropriate behaviors and conform to certain behaviors and function appropriately in society.
Similarly, we are God’s children. God loves us and wants only the best for us. He is God, supreme king of the universe. He loves His children and will keep us safe and supply all our needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). However, to remain under that safety umbrella, we must seek to have and maintain that parent child relationship with God and conform to His expectations. God already loves you, and if you love Him and keep His commandments, He will supply all your needs. He will be your present help in times of trouble, and whosoever calls on the name of the Lord, shall be saved (Romans 10:13).
If we seek God with all our hearts, love Him, and acknowledge Him as father. He will be our God, our guide, protector, and provider.
